How to sell more on WhatsApp with strategy and AI agents

An AI agent without a strategy only answers faster

Selling more on WhatsApp with an AI agent depends less on the technology and more on what you teach it. An agent that answers fast but doesn't know what to sell, to whom and what the next step is only delivers polite answers to leads who don't buy.

Picture a common scenario. At 11 p.m., a lead who saw your ad asks for the price. If nobody answers, they compare it with another offer before going to bed. If an agent answers right away but with generic information, they get a reply and still have no reason to buy. What converts is the right answer, at the right moment, with a clear path to the payment link.

That is what separates an operation that uses AI from one that sells with AI. The technology covers hours and volume. The strategy defines what happens inside the conversation.

What an AI agent does in the sales process

An AI agent on WhatsApp takes the front line of the sales conversation: it greets the lead, understands what they need and guides them to the next step. At Claryflow, the agent built with Clary AI qualifies leads, provides support and sells on WhatsApp 24 hours a day. When you create it, you choose its main goal: selling and answering questions, support and after-sales, or qualifying and handing off to the team.

In practice, that covers three tasks:

  • Qualify: ask what the lead needs and separate those ready to buy from those still researching
  • Answer: clear up questions about price, content, timing and payment methods without a queue
  • Guide: take the conversation to the checkout link or to the moment of handing off to someone on the team

Notice that none of the three is "talk about anything". A good sales agent is narrow and focused.

Strategy comes first: four decisions the agent won't make for you

The agent carries out what you define, and creating a Clary AI agent, done in six steps, shows where each decision goes:

  • Which offer it sells. In the "What it needs to know" step, you select the products it can access and register the frequent questions with the right answer, such as payment methods and guarantee. If you want, it also reads up to 5 pages of your website. With no product selected, the agent has no price or link to sell
  • How it handles each profile. In "How it sells", you write the sales step by step, the qualification criteria and the most common objections with the answer you would give, such as "it's too expensive" and "I'll think about it". The screen itself suggests writing as if you were training a new salesperson on their first day
  • What it must never promise. The "Rules and policies" block holds guarantee, deadlines, returns and business hours. The "Topics it should not handle" field (optional, one per line) records the limits, such as not offering a discount or condition that isn't published and not promising sales results
  • When it hands off to a person. In "How it serves", you define in which situations the conversation goes to the team, as we will see further on

Creating the agent takes about 5 minutes and everything can be adjusted later, but the time you spend thinking about what to write in these fields is worth more than any fine-tuning afterwards.

The common mistake: turning the AI on and expecting it to figure things out

Two mistakes keep coming up. The first is activating the agent without teaching it the offer. The Clary AI test screen warns you when something is missing, such as a selected product, sales instructions, objections and rules, and makes it clear that this doesn't stop you from activating it, but it does improve the answers. Without that, the result is a friendly conversation that leads nowhere.

The second is keeping the AI isolated from the rest of the operation. The agent talks, but the lead doesn't show up in the funnel, nobody on the team sees what was said and the follow-up starts from scratch. The way out is keeping the AI on the same platform as the CRM, the pipeline and the automations, so the conversation is part of the process and not a parallel channel.

Where an AI agent generates the most sales

An agent generates the most sales when demand is greater than one person's capacity to reply. Four situations account for most of the result:

  • Leads that arrive after hours. Ads run at night and on weekends, and the hot lead shows up when the team is offline. Replying within minutes keeps the purchase intent alive
  • Leads that ask for the price. It is the clearest sign of interest in the whole journey, and the window to reply is short. Here the agent should answer with value, benefit and next step, not just a number
  • Message spikes during a launch or campaign. A successful broadcast generates dozens of replies at the same time, and the agent absorbs the volume while the team handles the most important conversations
  • Leads that go quiet mid-conversation. With reminders turned on, the agent picks the conversation back up after the time you set, within WhatsApp's 24-hour window. If the lead replies, the reminders stop, and if they don't reply to the last one, the conversation is closed

There is also a division worth understanding. Event-triggered automations, such as abandoned checkout, Pix generated and declined purchase, cover what happens on the sales platform. The agent covers the conversation that starts when the lead replies. The two connect: in Automations, the "Assign Clary agent" action puts the agent in the right conversation, whether by abandoned cart, approved purchase, funnel stage or tag, and the automation takes priority over the default agent. That way, each situation can be handled by an agent with the instructions best suited to it.

How to split the work between the agent and the team

The agent takes what is repetitive and frequent, and the team keeps what requires judgment. The first reply, recurring questions, qualification and sending the link go in the first group. Negotiation, complex objections, higher-ticket customers and relationship go in the second.

The gain shows up in the team's time. When repetitive questions stop filling the day, the conversations where a person really makes a difference get real attention.

The handoff to the team is configurable. In the "How it serves" step, you turn four situations on or off: the customer asked to talk to a person, the agent doesn't know the answer, the customer is upset, and there is a refund or cancellation request. When one of them happens, the conversation moves to the "Waiting for agent" status, and the lead isn't stuck with an AI that can't solve the problem.

Review the conversations every week. Every handoff caused by missing knowledge points to information that was missing from the setup, such as a frequent question with no registered answer or a policy that wasn't written down, and fixing it improves every conversation that follows.

Test before you activate

Before turning the agent on, talk to it as if you were a customer. Clary AI offers two ways to test: test mode, where the agent only replies to up to 3 numbers you register, and a simulation on the screen itself, which shows when it would hand the conversation off to the team.

Test the questions that weigh most on the sale: the price, "it's too expensive", "I'll think about it", a refund request and a request to talk to a person. If an answer comes out weak, adjust the matching block and test again. Every test reply uses plan credits, just like on WhatsApp.

What to measure to know it is working

AI in customer service without metrics is a gamble. Five indicators show what is happening:

  • Time to first reply. It should drop to minutes, at any hour
  • Qualified lead rate. The share of conversations that reach the next step, whether the checkout link or the handoff to the team
  • Conversion by pipeline stage. It shows where most leads get stuck, as we explain in the article on CRM and lead management
  • Handoffs to the team. Separate the ones the lead asked for from the ones that happened because the agent didn't know the answer, since the latter point to information missing from the setup
  • AI credits used relative to sales. The AI strength defines the cost of each reply: low, recommended for most conversations, uses 1 credit, medium uses 20 and high uses 50, and each reminder counts as a reply. Track usage alongside revenue to see whether the agent is paying for itself, and save medium and high for consultative sales and complex negotiations. FAQ

Does a WhatsApp AI agent replace my sales team?

No. It takes the front line, with qualification, frequent questions and sending the link. The team remains responsible for negotiation, complex objections and the relationship. With Clary AI, you choose when the conversation goes to a person: when the customer asks, when the agent doesn't know the answer, when the customer is upset and on refund or cancellation requests.

What do I need to define before creating the AI agent?

Four things: the offer (the products it can access and the frequent questions), how it guides the sale and handles objections, the rules and the topics it should not handle, and when it hands off to a person. Creating it takes about 5 minutes and everything can be adjusted later.

Is Clary AI included in every plan, and how much does each reply cost?

Yes. All three plans include Clary AI, with monthly AI credits: 5,500 on Starter, 10,000 on Growth and 25,000 on Enterprise. On low strength, each reply uses 1 credit, on medium it uses 20 and on high it uses 50.

Can I use the AI agent together with sales recovery automations?

Yes. Event-triggered automations, such as abandoned checkout and Pix generated, keep working alongside Clary AI. In Automations, the "Assign Clary agent" action puts the agent in the right conversation, and the automation takes priority over the default agent.
