Abandoned cart on WhatsApp: why it recovers more than e-mail
Recovering abandoned carts on WhatsApp works because the message arrives where the customer is already looking. The Baymard Institute, which compiles data from dozens of checkout studies, estimates that about 7 in 10 online carts are abandoned before payment. It is the sale closest to happening, and the reminder that should rescue it usually goes by e-mail, which the customer opens hours later, if at all.
On WhatsApp the message shows up next to conversations with friends and family, with the store name, the product left behind and a direct link back to the cart. This article shows how to set up that recovery for an online store, step by step, from the event to measurement.
How recovery works: from event to message
Automatic recovery depends on an event: the store tells Claryflow that someone left the cart, and the automation sends the message. The connection is made through a custom webhook. There is no native integration with store platforms such as Shopify, Nuvemshop or VTEX, but any platform able to send the abandoned-cart event works.
- The store sends the event by webhook with the customer data, phone, product and cart link
- Claryflow creates or updates the lead in the CRM and applies the event tag
- The automation waits the time you set and checks whether the purchase was completed in that interval
- If it was not, it sends the first recovery message on WhatsApp
- If the customer replies, the conversation goes to service or to the AI agent, and if they pay, the sequence stops
The point of attention is the phone number. If your store checkout does not collect the WhatsApp number before the abandonment, there is nobody to send to. Placing the phone field at the start of checkout is the change that widens recovery reach the most.
The message sequence worth testing
A short sequence of three spaced messages is a good starting point. The timings below are a suggestion to test, not a rule. The ideal interval varies with ticket size and product type, and only your own measurement shows what works in your store.
| Message | When to send (suggestion) | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Reminder | About 30 to 60 minutes after abandonment | Remind the product and offer help, with the link back |
| 2. Question or objection | The next day | Answer shipping, deadline or payment questions before they become a drop-off |
| 3. Last notice | Between 48 and 72 hours | Close with real urgency, such as limited stock or the end of a condition |
Write the way a person from the store would. A first-message example, in a direct tone: "Hi, Carla! I saw the Urban Sneaker stayed in your cart. If you have any question about size or shipping, reply here and I will help. The link to finish is this one: [link]".
Avoid a discount in the first message. It teaches customers to abandon on purpose to earn a coupon and erodes margin. Save the incentive for the second or third message, and only for people who did not reply.
What the Meta rules require in these messages
The recovery message goes out outside the 24-hour window, so it must be a Meta-approved template sent to someone who opted in. Meta requires the business to obtain the customer permission before messaging, and the opt-in can be general as long as the business complies with local law. Cart reminders tend to be classified as marketing, and each category has a different fee.
- Record consent at checkout, with a clear sentence saying the customer agrees to receive messages from the store on WhatsApp
- Offer a simple way to stop receiving messages, and honor the request immediately
- Register the template with variables (name, product, link) and without promises the store does not keep
- Monitor the template quality rating, because poor sending reduces the account limit
To understand how to ask for consent in practice, and what the Brazilian data protection law requires, see the article about WhatsApp opt-in.

Recovering carts by hand works with five abandonments a day and breaks with fifty. There are four cases where only automation holds the result:
- The 2 a.m. abandonment, where the reminder has to go out at the right time and not in the middle of the night
- The customer who buys another way while the message is scheduled and must not receive a reminder for a purchase already made
- The conversation that starts after the first message and needs an answer in minutes, not the next day
- The Pix or boleto generated and not paid, which is another event and calls for another message
That last case deserves its own automation. Whoever generated the Pix has already decided to buy, and the payment reminder has a different tone and deadline than the cart reminder. To build the three recovery flows with the logic of each event, see the article about sales recovery automations.
Automation flows for sales recovery on WhatsAppWhat to measure to know it is working
- Recovery rate: carts that became purchases after the message, divided by the abandoned carts that received the sequence
- Revenue recovered per month, compared with the cost of the messages sent
- Reply rate per message, to see which step of the sequence gets the most conversation
- Requests to stop receiving messages, which rise when tone or frequency is wrong
- Template quality rating, which protects the account sending limit
Whenever volume allows, compare with a group that does not receive the sequence for a period. It is the only way to separate the sale the message recovered from the sale that would have happened anyway. The operation-wide metrics are in the article about WhatsApp sales metrics.
WhatsApp sales metricsHow Claryflow organizes this for your store
In Claryflow, the store connects through a webhook, each event becomes a lead in the CRM with the right tag, and automations send the recovery sequence through Meta Official API. If the customer replies, the conversation lands in the service chat or is taken over by the Clary AI agent, which answers questions about shipping, deadlines and payment and guides them back to the link.

How do I recover an abandoned cart through WhatsApp?
The store sends the abandoned-cart event to the automation platform by webhook, and a sequence of approved-template messages goes out through the Official API to people who opted in, stopping as soon as the purchase is completed.
Can I send an abandoned cart message without the customer having authorized it?
No. Meta requires opt-in before messages outside the 24-hour window, and Brazilian data protection law requires a legal basis to process the phone number. Consent should be requested clearly at checkout.
Does Claryflow integrate with Shopify, Nuvemshop or VTEX?
There is no native integration with those platforms. The connection is through a custom webhook, and any platform that sends the abandoned-cart event can connect.
How many messages should I send to recover a cart?
Three, spaced out, is a good starting point to test: a reminder, a message about questions and a last notice. The ideal interval varies by store and should be adjusted by the recovery rate and by requests to stop receiving messages.
